Your Participation Legal
Dear Friends,
Please keep our political process in prayer.
The headline in last Sunday’s Santa Fe New Mexican (April 5, 2009) read “Illegal interference sank partnership bill.” The Letters-to-the-Editor headline was a total fabrication. The “My View” article that followed mentioned neither domestic partnerships nor any illegality. The author of the article was careful to address how Christians should live, then berated those involved in the legislative process. The following are quotes from the article: “religious zealots,” “unprogressive and provocative attacks,” “blind adherence,” “blind and void of compassion,” “hypocritical, unkind, self-serving and perverse,” and “manifested in unconscionable and venomous discriminatory dictatorial agenda.”
No place in the article was there reference to the process being “illegal” or “interfered.” The fact is any individual, group or institution can and should participate in the legislative process, especially legislation that addresses the moral fiber and conscience of society.
On the same page an article by Bishop Sheehan came under the headline “Catholic Advocacy is not a Church-State issues.” The Bishop is right. It is not illegal. It is a right.
The above quoted material would probably be defended as a “freedom of speech” issue. Unless written by a Christian. Then it’s hate speech.
